Everybody needs to have Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness purchased by the weekend. Buy the Norton critical edition, if possible. Powell's and Amazon have loads of used copies for dirt cheap (http://tinyurl.com/y87queu). Start reading over the weekend; the first 25 pages of text should be sufficient.
